Exhaust leaks happen when part of your vehicle's exhaust system has a hole or a defect. According to the service department at our Ramsey Subaru of Des Moines, your vehicle exhaust system consists of

  • Valve and piston
  • Manifold
  • Catalytic converter
  • Exhaust pipe
  • Muffler
  • Tailpipe

A hole or defect in any of these components can result in exhaust leaks. Here are the warning signs.

Signs of an Exhaust Leak

  • Check engine light: Depending on your vehicle, this light comes on whenever there are emissions problems.
  • Cabin odor: Your vehicle cabin smells like gasoline or a rotten egg.
  • Smoky tailpipe: Black smoke from the tailpipe is a classic leak exhaust symptom.
  • Dragging tailpipe: A tailpipe that hangs or drags means something in the exhaust system is bent, broken or no longer held properly in place.
  • Noises: Manifold and donut gasket leaks are often the cause of strange hissing, ticking, tapping or popping.
  • Efficiency: A sharp decrease in vehicle efficiency often stems from exhaust leaks.

Fortunately, exhaust leaks are easy to fix, especially if caught early. Often, routine maintenance and staying abreast of warning signs are the best ways to catch the problem before it gets too bad.
