Make the New Subaru Outback Wilderness Your Next SUV

The Subaru Outback is a unique SUV many Ames and Ankeny shoppers have fallen in love with. It offers the design and practicality of a station wagon with the power and features of a more rugged crossover. However, if you're the type of person who enjoys traveling off the beaten path, then you want to pick up the Wilderness trim. The Outback Wilderness upgrades the standard all-wheel-drive system with a low-ratio setting, has all-terrain tires, and offers a lifted suspension for increased ground clearance. You'll be able to make short work of any terrain with the Wilderness trim, so purchase one at Ramsey Subaru of Des Moines.

What's New?

The Subaru Outback receives no changes for the new model year.

Design

Just like most other Subaru SUVs, the Outback Wilderness has a wagon-like body. But unlike other trims, the Wilderness offers high-ground clearance for off-road travel, 17-inch wheels with all-terrain tires, copper trim accents, and a unique fender flare design. There's also an upgraded roof rack with a 700-pound weight limit. Additionally, the interior is unchanged as it still has water-repellent simulated leather upholstery and a heated steering wheel.

Speaking of the interior, many drivers will enjoy the extra legroom offered as this year Subaru has given the Wilderness the added 1.4 inches of space. They'll also appreciate the available amenities like the heated front seats, power-adjustable driver's seat, and multiple USB ports. There's also a generous cargo area that holds 11 suitcases behind the rear seats, and up to 23 bags can fit with the rear seats folded.

Performance

Powering the Outback Wilderness is a turbocharged 2.4-liter engine that outputs 260-hp and 176 lbs.-ft of torque. The powertrain is mated to a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) and comes standard with all-wheel drive. In testing, the EPA found the engine to be fuel efficient, earning an estimated 23 mpg in the city and 30 on the highway.

Technology

Offered on the Wilderness trim are many of the same features in the Premium model. These features include heated and power-folding exterior mirrors, heated front seats, an 11.6-inch touchscreen display, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Though unique to the Wilderness are features like a heated steering wheel and a 12-speaker Harman Kardon stereo.

Safety Features

Since the Outback Wilderness is capable of off-road travel, Subaru has given this model safety features to help assist drivers on and off the road. Standard safety features for this model include:

  • Adaptive cruise control (maintains a driver-set distance between the Subaru and the car in front)
  • Forward collision warning with automatic braking (warns you of an impending collision and applies the brakes in certain scenarios)
  • Lane keeping assistance (makes minor steering corrections to help keep the vehicle centered in its lane)
  • Automatic high beams
  • Front skid plate
